Our view for 3 days...NOT bad
We arrived in time to head to the local fruit and veggie stand for some corn on the cob for dinner.
It was lobster and corn for dinner...YUM
About to go into the pot....
YUM -O...what a GREAT dinner...........
We were all full but very happy. After some clean up it was time to sit and watch the ocean...never boring. After a great nites sleep we headed out to see a car show. It was a bit gloomy so the participants were less, but ti was still really fun
This itty bitty camper was awesome, the owner invited everyone in..so nice. She said it's juts right for her....maybe a little too small for me, but really cute.
Loved these old bikes...some wooden spokes and leather seats...wow
Love the old cars, maybe one day.....
There was another car show in town, but due to bad weather, not much was happening. We rode out to The Nubble Lighthouse and saw their friend Bill that is an amazing artist. He paints/sketches pictures of The Nubble, then will sell them and personalize them for you and most of the money goes to save The Nubble...so cool
It was so nasty out we headed home to just chill...fun to watch the weather changes on the water.
After another wonderful dinner, we headed out to our "cottage"...we left the windows open and it was great. Though the days were not cool, the evenings were sometimes nice.
The next morning we headed out to see The Cliff House Inn right down the road, just gorgeous. I'm sure out of our price range, but beautiful
What a view....
Not a pretty day...drizzlely...but warm...not cool at all.
After this we headed to Flo's for a famous hotdog...
When it's your turn you better be fast, there is always a line, and u better order the way they want you to...lol
Nancy and Allen needed to get some things done so we headed out to do some shopping and the Stonewall Kitchen...such a great place, but always busy. Then we toured the hardware store, that is waaaaay more than a hardware store and we headed home.
Loved this building..we saw it on the way home..
Love all the colorful trap markers..
They were ready to go when we got back, so we headed to the Trading Post and out to dinner....
Right outside the front door...Mr. and Mrs. Moose...
Loved the Trading Post...what fun...Est 1938, could have spent many hours here.
Right inside the front door...
The mounts were amazing...and everywhere..
A little camera fun...
We're so silly...but we do have fun.
This shirt was just hilarious...reminded us of our nephew Chad when he was a little guy and used to dress up like Super Heroes and believed you thought he was one..
We walked over to a great seafood place for dinner and headed home....what a great rainy day, but we made lemonade!!
The next day, after breakfast...we headed to New Hampshire ....we were headed to The Cog Railway to ride the train. After a stop at some outlet stores we headed out. It was a cloudy drizzley day...but we were not in a hurry so we just took our time. We stopped at a train store, had some cool models inside and outside that you could ride. After a bit on the highway we drove through some beautiful towns and scenery was gorgeous. North Conway looked really busy with lots of shops and a different type of train ride. Bath, Bartlett and other little towns were small and quaint. We finally arrived at our hotel ....we didn't want to afford The Omni Mount Washington Resort built in 1902, so we stayed across the street. However, we had free shuttle service to the Resort and use of all their amenities. It was beautiful
It had this amazing wrap around HUGE porch to enjoy...
We decided to sit and enjoy...have a snack and a glass of wine...was delightful
A bit cloudy, but still beautiful....not a palm tree in sight..LOL!!
We walked all around and then had a fantastic steak dinner....
The Cave was an old speakeasy...
Cool bar....
After our amazing dinner, we headed back to our hotel...the next day was a Cog Railway ride...
Welcome to The Cog....since 1869, at Mt Washington 6288 feet.
All Aboard.....Denny is standing at the front, there is 1 passenger car and one engine that pushes it up the mountain.
And away we go...
Passenger car is very pretty...
Passing a train that's on the way down.
Water tank...
Can you see the cogs in the middle of the track??
Half Way house and rest area for hikers...
The conductor in the engine behind us pushing us up the mountain
Very steep ahead of us, was hard to walk in the pax car.
Beautiful as we get to the top...
Was still cloudy...
We can see the Summit Building...
Our tracks and our train ....it took about 45min to make the ride up.
We made it...we'd been warned to take jackets..but honestly it was not cold at all. It was a little windy, but mostly overcast and little rainy. But we could still see things.
How quickly the clouds rolled in, and then back out. Can't imagine being a hiker, you'd get lost in a hurry.
Built in 1853...
The check in area and lots of bunk beds...
Dining area...
Kitchen area...
Check out these winter shots...WOW, that's LOTS of snow
Things used here years ago and a sample menu...sounds good!!
The weather up here is unreal...the temp is below zero over 65 days a year, lowest temp recorded is 49 below zero. the highest is 74 F, average snowfall is 177 inches, avg wind is 37mph, during the winter months half the days it sustains winds of 75mph. Kinda brutal, not my idea of a fun winter get away!!
Note the roof tie downs....
A sad list of those that have lost their lives on Mt. Washington
I believe it....yikes
The next train coming up, we will ride this one down. There was a museum we didn't have time to go through. We really needed 2hrs at the top, but we only got 1 hr.
These are biodiesel trains and burn about 16-18 gallons of fuel per round trip. There is one coal -fired steam locomotive and uses 1 ton of coal plus 1000 gallons of water on the ascent. We did not choose to ride the coal-fired, but we did see it.
You can see the cogs really well in this picture..
On our way back down...so long summit
Some of the earlier engines and work equipment
Some crazy folks used to get on sled like things and race down from the top....CRA_CRA!!
This how the cogs work...
We love trains and had such a great time. It would have been nice if the clouds had cleared but it was still a fun day. We headed to find a restaurant and unless we wanted to go back the big hotel, and we didn't...there was only 1 option...unless we wanted to drive a long ways...again we didn't ...so we ate at the local place and were just fine. Headed back to our hotel and tuned in a movie...took it slow and enjoyed a quieter evening.
The next morning we had sched a buffet breakfast before heading back to Maine...
This hotel is grand...and breakfast was wonderful
Had great window table...nice views..
This table is always set in memory of Carolyn...the woman who's husband built the hotel...
One the way out we saw this roadside monument paying tribute to The Willey family that lost their lives in a record rainfall in Aug 1826
We'd been told to stop in this small town...covered bridge and all. It was very small, but cute. Then we headed through lots of small towns on our way back to Portland, Maine. We went to Freeport first for me to get in some LL Bean shopping...can't be this close to the home of LL Bean and not shop.
We found our hotel and walked to a local place for some dinner. We split a really good burger and headed back. After a good nites rest we headed to the Portland waterfront for some LOBSTER. We found this market down a side street...who knew there were so many types of oysters...and all spendy....
We actually decided to buy some lobster meat for dinner. We bought a salad at the hotel and had a great lobster salad in our room...what a great idea.
Check this out...yikes....
After walking around a bit we headed back..it was miserably hot...our luck, they were having a heat wave...oh great. We'd hope for cooler temps but had not had that the entire trip. I did get in some shopping then back to the hotel for our lobster/salad dinner...it was GREAT. Had to do some creative packing after all my shopping, but i got it done. The next day we headed to the airport and home. We missed one flight, so we sat a while, but we made the next one...so we were fine.
ATL here we come.
Maine is always a great trip ...we'll be back!!!
